So Much Charm

Panic was curdling my stomach. Every step closer to baggage claim meant closer to Daisy…which meant closer to admitting I married a man after spending six days with him.

Prying my fingers from Beau’s, I whimpered and came to a stop. I was on the verge of hyperventilating. Dropping my bag, I flapped my hands in front of my face, sweat dripping down my temples.

His brows furrowed and he twisted his waist to look around. “Ro, you okay?”

“I…I can’t do this!” I squeaked, my legs giving out to drop me to a squat.

His lids rounded and he roughly yanked on my elbow, snatching me back to my feet. His lips on my ear, he seethed, “You’re not wearing any panties. Don’t do that.”

I gripped his forearms, my nails digging into his skin. “I’m sorry, I…I…what did we do?” Gazing up at him with a silent plea, I clawed at him desperately. “What did we do yesterday?”

His lids closed and he heaved, his frame deflating. “You’re scared. I get it.”

“I am more than a little scared. In just a few minutes, I am being picked up by my friend, and I have to explain this!” I screeched, holding my hand up to show him the band.

Forcing a weak smile, he curled his fingers around mine and kissed the knuckles. “It’s going to be okay. I didn’t expect us to get off this plane and frolic into the sunset to my place to live happily ever after.”

“You didn’t?”

“No,” he laughed. Picking up my bag, he twined our fingers and urged me to walk. “There’s going to be a lot of adjustments. You need to break the news to your people, and I need to let Justine and Paul know we’re done. You need to pack up your things, and I need to clean up the house to get it ready for you.”

“No one will understand.”

He rolled a shoulder and scrunched the side of his face. “Not at first, but eventually, they’ll see what I already know.”

“What?”

He stopped and cupped my cheek. “That you’re the perfect match for me. That you’re the only woman in this world I want to share my life with. That I love you.”

My chin quivered and my heart swelled. There he went with that charm again.

“Look.” He hooked the strap of my bag in the crook of his elbow and held up his hand. Twisting his ring back and forth, he took it off and put it in his pocket. Then he took my hand and removed it.

To my horror, my finger curled, catching it on the last knuckle to prevent it from leaving. Not noticing I did that, he held it up between his index and thumb, staring at me through his lashes. Dropping it into my purse, he cupped my cheek again.

“For now, we hide them. Until everyone in our circles is up to date, we don’t wear them.”

“You’re okay with that?”

“I want the best, easiest, smoothest transition. This is going to be tough on us both.
